Pond may be heavily associated with Tame Impala, but if you’re looking for another smooth, Aussie psych-revival act, you can look elsewhere. The band certainly plays with the psychedelic genre, but they come at it from an opposing angle than their brethren down under, producing heavy, paranoid tunes that sounds more like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin than Syd Barrett. Jay Watson (a regular Tame Impala tour member) heads up the project. It’s a dark trip, especially on Whatever Happened To The Million Head Collide, a lurching, screaming dose of massive riffs, restless drums and disembodied vocals. It’s a huge, disjointed tune that shows there’s more than pop sensibility to be mined from the musical legacy of psychotropic experimentation.
