On the surface sounding like an ode to rock and roll, I Dig Rock & Roll Music is actually a snarky takedown of the perceived vapidity of the folk rock scene. Peter, Paul & Mary take umbrage with none other than The Mama’s & The Papa’s, Donovan, and The Beatles, calling them bad songwriters and sellouts. They also call out the music establishment and radio’s anti-political leanings as reasons they’re not getting played. Jealous much? Absolutely. But that doesn’t change the fact that if you don’t listen to the lyrics (and who does?), it’s an inadvertently great piece of the folk rock they apparently so loathed.
